COMPACT LINEAR ACTUATORS WITH LONG STROKE OPTIONS

Group 42 Beck drives offer the benefit of a total control package, utilizing reliable electronics to match the speed and precision of your process instrumentation.

Standard Group 42 modulating drives (control option 9) are equipped with Beck’s Digital Control Module (DCM-2), which controls the position of the drive according to the input signal it receives. A position feedback signal is delivered to the DCM from the position sensing device (Beck’s Contactless Position Sensor (CPS-4)).

This signal is continuously compared to the demand input signal. A change in the input signal results in an immediate repositioning of the drive to balance the two signals.

DIGITAL CONTROL MODULE (DCM-3) (USED ON MODEL 42-109)

Electronics Used on Control Option 9

Beck’s DCM-2 provides modulating control in response to standard control system signals.

Notable features include:

  • Convenient user interface for calibration and drive status.
  • HART® compatibility.
  • Compatible with common asset management systems.
  • Receives control signals directly, eliminating the need for contact protection devices, relays, switches and reversing starters.
  • Designed to operate continuously at temperatures from -40º F to 185º F (-40° to 85° C).
  • Initiates shaft movement in steps ranging from 0.10% to 0.25% of span, depending on the timing of the gear train.
CONTACTLESS POSITION SENSOR (CPS) (USED ON MODEL 42-109)

Beck’s patented CPS technology has been providing reliable control feedback with infinite resolution in our products for many years.

  • Utilizes a unique ferrite magnetic design with no contacting or wiping surfaces to wear or intermittently lose contact.
  • The ferrite rotor is driven directly by the output shaft through anti-backlash gearing.
  • A 4–20 mA position feedback signal is available for remote indication.
42-107 CONTROL MODULE

Electronics Used on Control Option 7

The 42-107 electronics package has a 4-20 mA modulating control board with position feedback.

The 42-107 has time-proven analog electronics on-board for simple, reliable, no-frills positioning and feedback of the drive.

A stall alarm contact and two auxiliary limit switches for position indication are integral features for the model 42-107.

Electronics Used on Control Option 5

The 42-105 is equipped with similar analog electronics to the 42-107, but requires 120 VAC pulsed control instead of 4-20 mA. It allows direct AC control of the drive’s motor for either PAT type modulation or simple multi-position
control. The 42-105 provides a 4-20 mA position feedback and is equipped with two auxiliary limit switches for position indication.

Electronics Used on Control Option 3

The 42-103 is intended for simple open/close operation. Direct AC to the motor will drive the unit to it fully open or fully closed position. Limit switches at each end of travel will stop the drive and may also be used for external
signaling.

Up to two optional non-dedicated Form C switches are available. These switches are cam-operated and easily adjusted in the field. Wiring connections are provided in the drive terminal compartment to allow easy access.

Beck Drive Motor: Precise, Reliable Control

Like all Beck drives, the Group 42 utilizes a low current draw, continuous duty motor design. This motor ensures that the drive will not coast or overshoot and will not overheat, even under continuous modulation. The net result is consistent, repeatable positioning with no duty limitations.

Electric Handswitch: Time-Saving Local Operation

Similar to all Beck drives, the Group 42 is equipped with an override manual Handswitch to aid in the setup and installation of the drive independent of external control signals.

Drive Train

The Group 42 drive train is designed for high efficiency, consistent performance, and durability. The Group 42 drive train consists of spur gears coupled to a ball screw. This design improves performance and reliability and reduces maintenance requirements when compared to typical linear electric actuators.

Manual Operation

Group 42 drive can be manually operated, without power, by a Handwheel directly connected to the drive motor shaft. This allows positioning of the driven load in the absence of AC power.

Clevis Mounting

The Group 42 utilizes a clevis style mounting that is both rugged and simple to use. The clevis mounting provides the flexibility to easily adapt the drive to most applications.

CONTROL OPTION

Group 42 Beck drives have a model number 42-100. This drive has the capability to be equipped with different electronics combinations, which are called control options. The control option number will replace the last zero in the model number when specifying a drive model and control option. For example, a model 42-100 drive that is setup to use the control option 9 electronics would be considered a model 42-109 drive. A basic description for each control option is provided below. DESCRIPTION

The standard modulating drive offering is the control option 9. Control option 9 units are equipped with the Beck DCM (Digital Control Module) and CPS(Contactless Position Sensor). The option 9 drives may be controlled with a 4-20 mA or 1-5Vdc signal and have an integral 4-20 mA position feedback signal. The microprocessor based DCM provides a multitude of flexibility for setup, calibration, and diagnostics including HART communications, on-board pushbuttons for calibrating stroke, on-board diagnostic status, stall protection circuitry, and status alerts.

DESCRIPTION

The control option 7 drive is a modulating unit that is offered with time-proven analog electronics. The option 7 drive is equipped with the analog electronics control end and a potentiometer to derive an internal position reading.The standard control option 7 units may be controlled by a 4-20 mA signal, and they provide a 4-20 mA position feedback signal. For added flexibility, a 2-wire or 4-wire feedback is available on the 42-107 drive.

DESCRIPTION

The control option 5 drive is a modulating unit controlled with 120 VAC direct to the motor. A film potentiometer is standard utilized for generation of a 4-20 mA position feedback signal. For added flexibility, a 2-wire or 4-wire feedback is available on the 42- 105 drive.

DESCRIPTION

The control option 3 drive is an open/close unit controlled with 120 VAC direct to the motor. When the drive hits the limit switch at either of the two end-of-travel positions, power is cut to the motor.

HOW TO ORDER

Beck Group 42 drives are available in one basic model, the 42-100 drive. The 42-100 has several control options available to suit your application requirements. The following instructions are intended to make it easy to specify and order Beck Group 42 drives. If questions arise concerning additional options or control modes, contact your Beck Sales Engineer.

Complete instruction manuals are furnished with each drive order.

All Beck drives are shipped calibrated to the customer specifications written into the equipment order.

DETERMINE REQUIRED PARAMETERS
  • Basic model number is 42-100
  • Control option (9, 7, 5, or 3)

SPECIFY FULL MODEL NUMBER

Using the information above, fill out the full model number according to the following formula:

PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Desired stroke (between 5″ and 18″)
